Are you a student moving to or away from Edinburgh? Here is a packing list you’ll need to get you through the term!
A university packing/removals list can seem like a pretty daunting list to tackle, considering most people have never had to pack up and leave home this early in their lives.
Luckily, you’ve already done the hard work! You’ve got yourself into university, you’ve sorted out your halls/house (hopefully) and now you’re facing the final hurdle, which is… what the hell do I take?
At Edinburgh Removals, we understand the stress that surrounds moving all your goods into your new university accommodation. If you are moving to Edinbrugh, then welcome! (Or, Ceud mìle fàilte if you speak Gaelic).
We’ve compiled our moving essentials into separate categories, to make it easier for you to tick off as you sort.
Do note that this list isn’t for everyone, it just serves as a general university checklist, we don’t want to get into bother if you forget something…
Bathroom Packing List
Bathroom essentials are, well… essential. This category is arguably the one that people neglect to pay attention to, so here’s Edinburgh Removals list!
- Bath mat
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Washing bag
- Shower Gel/Shampoo
Top tip: Pack a medicine box! When you’re at university, you won’t have mum and dad to look after you when you fall ill, or get incredibly hungover (This happens a lot in Edinburgh). So, pack a little medicine box full of the things you think will come in handy when you get ill. We’re talking about paracetamol, flu tablets, plasters, antiseptic cream, hay-fever tablets, and whatever else you think you may need.
Bedroom Packing List
- Hangers (very important!)
- Bed sheets and duvet
- Washing/laundry bag
- Door hanger (for coats, bags, etc)
- Clothes horse
- Mattress protector
- Electric blanket/hot water bottle
Top tip: We would recommend bringing a laptop/games console for those quieter nights. Sometimes you won’t want to go out, and these come in handy. If that’s not
your thing, then just make sure you bring something that will keep you preoccupied, books, films, whatever you think would be best for you.
Kitchen Items Packing List
Arguably the longest list… so you are best off printing this page.
- Plates, bowls, dishes
- Cooking utensils (wok, frying pan, sauce pan, spatulas)
- Baking tray/pizza tray
- Tea and coffee
- Oven gloves
- Can opener/bottle opener/tin opener
- Cheese grater (personally essential to me)
- Hand towels
- Herbs and spices
Top Tip: you don’t actually need to pack much of this! Of course, it would save some money if you were able to bring the majority of this, though, if you’re looking to save s
pace, time, and energy, then most of this you can easily buy. Better yet, if you want, you can even use some of the spare cutlery you might have lying around the house… if you’re that attached to it.
Academic Items Packing List
Yes, sorry, you need these as well:
- Pencil case (yes, you’ll still need this!)
- Diary or planner
- Post-it notes
Top tip: Don’t re-use your old notebooks/work books from school, it’s much better to buy something new and make a fresh start. Buy all new equipment if necessary, you don’t want to be asking people to borrow things as soon as you walk into university.
Other Bits & Bobs
This part is up to you! If you have any other things you want to bring along, then do! Just make sure you’re sensible and realistic about what you’re bringing. Here are a few to get your brain thinking:
- Playing cards
- Games console
- Alarm clock
And that’s about it we think! But if you think we have forgotten something, please do let us know.
Once you’ve finished packing, have an itinerary at hand to check over all the things you’ve marked down. The last thing you want is to arrive at university, only to have forgotten to bring something essential. Moving out can be quite a stressful task, and we understand that, because we’ve moved out several students from all over the UK!
